Through the medium of art, the sculptor created a setting where Jesus is tenderly watching hens gather their chicks. In the depiction we can contemplate the merciful condescension of God in his lament over Jerusalem: “Oh Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered you even as a hen gathers her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!” He uses the metaphor of the devoted way a mother hen gathers her chicks under her wings. It’s amazing that Jesus chose this visual of tenderness to express how He feels about us.
